Noise: Snap! Poncho: What are you doing? Hudson: There's always one guy who has his helmet clasp unfastened and hanging down, so he looks cool, like he doesn't even care if his helmet falls off. I want to be that guy. Poncho: Crazy som' beech. At war with the squirrels.

It was explained in “To Hell and Back”, that if the strap were fastened, the force of a nearby explosion could result in the loss of your head from the helmet being carried away.

yup. most soldiers actually clasped the strap over top of the helmet, and used it to hold useful items like bandages.

I’ve got one of those helmets: it’s a two part thing. It allows for secure fixing for training purposes and has a “break-away” connection for combat use.
Unfortunately, the break-away connection (a little ball in a V-notch) pinches ones skin incessantly if one uses it, so my guess is soldiers just didn’t want a bunch of little infected wounds on their chins/necks.

It’s kind of like the seatbelt thing. The pros of fastening the strap far outweigh the cons. You’re much safer with it snapped.
In this case they’ve only got sticks that they’re fighting with!!!!

Dapperdan61, Poo Poo did – that’s Millhouse. I mean, uh…
What *is* that dog’s name? He just always makes me think of Millhouse from The Simpsons, though.

In basic training, whenever our Drill Instructor saw a so’jer with his strap undone, he’d shout “WHO ARE YOU? AUDIE F*%$&’N MURPHY?”
This was in 1984, so I don’t know how many of my fellow recruits knew who Audie Murphy WAS, but referring to John Wayne probably wouldn’t have been much more effective. My generation knew Wayne solely from Westerns rather than War movies, and at least Murphy actually served…
