What’s wrong with the name Charlie Brown?

And of course, the one part of the dialogue here, between Charlie Brown and the kid behind him(in Panels 2 and 3)is also used in “Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown,” when he meets the bullies at camp and tells them his name, that’s EXACTLY what they say,“Hey! Get a load of the kid with the WEIRD NAME!” Did Schulz also get mistreated like CB does? (I have read, that Schulz did in fact base CB on himself—like Charlie Brown, Schulz, too, had done poorly in school and could never bring himself to ask a girl out on a date.) So, makes you wonder if “Sparky” had also been mistreated and bullied by his peers, as well.

Well, if true, Sparky’s bullies have faded into insignificance, while he has achieved lasting fame and adoration. Game over: Bullies lose.

“Charlie Brown” is just about the least weird name in America.

This was adapted into the TV special “It Was a Short Summer, Charlie Brown”.
