There is some truth in what Opal is saying: someone does have to be an adult if the other “adult” is more like a child. If both of them were like Earl then who would be looking after the “grown-up” things? I doubt Opal was always this grumpy and nit-picky. Sometimes the seedling is bent because of a forceful wind - in this case call they call the wind Earl.
opal as usual is clueless. when you get to that age you have enough worries without nit picking. other than some basic cleaning and some cooking opal should just chill out more. one thing of note: i have been reading this strip from the beggining and as far as i know there has been no mention of what earl did before retiring. of course there are physically demanding jobs that wear people down but there are also white collar jobs that do thr same. such as (health) insurance adjusters. so those people who think earl is too immature might want to consider there is a reason he just enjoys life the way he does.
