    “…Still standing. Strange. …”

Makes sense to me. Without the “ideologically impure thoughts” part there is no substance. It would take a lot more than I’ve seen to think there’s a heart beating in there or lifeblood flowing. So its hollow. Hollow things can be propped up. If there were an analogous purge happening (I don’t see it- but maybe there is) I’d say the same thing if it were a donkey head.

Two vast and trunkless legs of stone stand in the desert. Near them on the sand, half sunk, a shatter’d visage lies…

Thanks to Nandy, for reminding me of one of my favorites.

Instead of widening their base, the republicans seem intent on narrowing it. Dumb.

The full reference: Ozymandias I met a traveller from an antique land Who said – “two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert … near them, on the sand, Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lips, and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed; And on the pedestal these words appear: My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings, Look on my Works ye Mighty, and despair! Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away. ” –Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) thanks to [rpo.library.utoronto.ca] for the archive. Ineffably sad, reminiscent of the jester tasked for a phrase for his King, good for best and worst times; the result? “This Too Shall Pass”.

What happened to the Republicans? It’s sad, really. The party of Lincoln, TR, and even occasionally Nixon has come to this. If they did get back to their true roots – conservatism, which by the way included conserving the environment, a balanced budget, protecting people against robber baron trusts and a strong defense instead of wild spending, wastage, worship of big business, and treating the armed forces like dirt, they might indeed come back. (Of course, I’m ignoring that Lincoln was a “radical lib.”)

I should have added “big business.” Republicans show no signs of supporting small businesses or entrepreneurs, who energize the economy.
