This is an illusion, even for Benson.

Yes, and let’s praise the captain of the Titanic for the number of times he crossed the Atlantic without hitting an iceberg. I can think of 3,000 people who probably wish Bush had kept the country safe for the full eight years he was in charge. As long as by “safe” you only mean safe from airplanes flying into buildings. If by “safe” you mean out of unnecessary wars, the number goes WAY above 3,000.

it’s generally agreed that the world and the usa is a MUCH more dangerous place now as opposed to seven years ago. the essence of this cartoon is really way off base.

Isn’t New Orleans part of the country Bush was asked to keep safe? Isn’t Detroit? Isn’t Wall Street? Isn’t my house? Aren’t the soldiers in Iraq part of the country? Lisa has a selective definition of the word “safe”, and, given that 9/11 happened on Bush’s watch, won’t even hold him responsible when he fails at that limited task.

I really tire of conservatives like Benson. Think about it. W kept the country safe? We’re in two disastrous wars; everyone is in the process of going broke all up and down the economy (and around the world) and all because of free-groove’n conservatives and their hands-off perspective. Bush kept the country safe because the terrorist are dumber than dirt and had Rice and Bush had their eyes open, 9/11 wouldn’t have happened anyway. Just like Bush no.1: they never expected that Husain had the audacity to invade Kuwait. Check out what Maudlin Albright said to them when they were on the boarder ready to invade. These people are stupid and blinded by their own BS. Who pays? Well, the management of the investment firms are doing pretty good right now. How are you doing? Bush went to war, not against the New Deal, but the Progressive Era. Regulations were put in place, not by liberals, but by in large by Orange County Republicans who were tired of getting screwed by the Robber Barons. Now the Republicans in the Senate are going to make mischief and hell by just being obstructionist, primarily by positioning themselves as (get this) champions of “budget responsibility.” This is the gang that got us into the greatest debt the nation has ever experienced! Of course Benson, Rush, Fox News and McCoy are already on board with this slant. Who needs enemies with a “loyal opposition” like this? What is their objective but total and complete ruin?

Absolutely correct everyone. I love the Titanic analogy. (Although wasn’t that a maiden voyage? How about praising the number of times Joseph Hazelwood captained the Exxon Valdez safe and sober?) And about the obstructionist Republicans: Bush rammed through a huge bailout so the CEOs could still get bonuses, spa vacations, etc. But now that a Democrat is trying to do something that will actually help the middle class and create jobs, OOPS, can’t spend that kind of money!

    nz4m60: Spot on.

These Bush apologists are getting awfully shrill lately. I guess they think if they say it louder & more often it will somehow magically become true. Can’t wait until they go away. Safe? My a$$.

Kept the Country Safe for 7 Years is the lie that conservatives love to believe in. It is their new mantra. He sat on his ranch in August of 2001 when National Security Reports were warning of an attack He sat on his ranch when the people were drowning in New Orleans He sat on his ranch as the country went through an economic meltdown Now that he has all the time to sit on his ranch, he buys a luxury house in Dallas
