Oh man, Wally’s face especially in the second panel. It looks like his mind just snapped. He’s either going to go feral cat on her, have a breakdown, possibly be too numb/shocked to do anything, or something else I’m not thinking of.Darn it! Why did today have to be Friday?! Now I’m going to be spending all weekend wondering what Wally is going to do on Monday!
I can’t really see Wally flying to far off the handle on her. He might yell for a moment, but I think he’ll feel a sort of “weight off my shoulders” and be at an odd peace.
I don’t think Wally’s snapped, it’s more like staring disbelief. This is probably the best thing Holly could do for him, but he’s still a hobo at heart and staying in Endtown will kill him eventually. I want to know if Holly will agree to go outside into the wastelands with him as a fellow hobo. I also want to see Holly outracing people again.
This is one of the things that I love about Endtown. There are no words spoken in today’s strip. But there are volumes and volumes of meaning that just flow from the panels. Aaron, you are a genius!
It’s old-style storytelling.. but it never goes out of style. :)Very nicely done – Wally had plenty of time to stop her. I see Holly as walking quietly, almost gently, over to the pack. He never stopped her. Either he’ll explode, or he’ll just deflate.Oh, and Wally: She said you had nice eyes. Remember that. :)
I must say, this is the one strip on this whole service where I appreciate the comments almost as much as the strip itself. Congratulations, Aaron; and all the regulars, too. Great job!
I don’t get to see these comics every day because of my work and travel schedule, but this is one of the few strips I always go back and read all of the strips from the days I’ve missed. Excellent story-telling, and the artwork is masterful. Please, keep up the good work Mr. Neathery.
It’s just a picture of what you used to be, not what you are now. Like the paper boat she converted it into, let the memory of what you once was slowly drift away…. [Echo]…drift away…drift away…[Echo Fades].
Nah, it’s her way of saying ‘Let go of your past’ – “Live in the present” is, of course, the accepted corollary. Nonetheless, I think this is pretty rude of her. To take someone’s prized possession and throw it away, is rude. Therapeutic though… Which reminds me, time for me to clean-out some junk around here!
I just wonder what happened to all the critters that were critters at the start of the war. Perhaps this is some enviromentalist way of saving genetic diversity? Riviting story line with good comments.
absolutely beautifuli’m reminded of the japanese lanternsfrom the mighty wikipediaObon is a shortened form of Ullambana (Japanese: 于蘭盆會 or 盂蘭盆會, urabon’e). It is Sanskrit for “hanging upside down” and implies great suffering.2 The Japanese believe they should ameliorate the suffering of the “Urabanna”.Bon Odori originates from the story of Maha Maudgalyayana (Mokuren), a disciple of the Buddha, who used his supernatural powers to look upon his deceased mother. He discovered she had fallen into the Realm of Hungry Ghosts and was suffering.3 Greatly disturbed, he went to the Buddha and asked how he could release his mother from this realm. Buddha instructed him to make offerings to the many Buddhist monks who had just completed their summer retreat, on the fifteenth day of the seventh month. The disciple did this and, thus, saw his mother’s release. He also began to see the true nature of her past unselfishness and the many sacrifices that she had made for him. The disciple, happy because of his mother’s release and grateful for his mother’s kindness, danced with joy. From this dance of joy comes Bon Odori or “Bon Dance”, a time in which ancestors and their sacrifices are remembered and appreciated. See also: Ullambana Sutra. As Obon occurs in the heat of the summer, participants traditionally wear yukata, or light cotton kimonos. Many Obon celebrations include a huge carnival with rides, games, and summer festival food like watermelon.4The festival ends with Toro Nagashi, or the floating of lanterns. Paper lanterns are illuminated and then floated down rivers symbolically signaling the ancestral spirits’ return to the world of the dead. This ceremony usually culminates in a fireworks display.[edit]
Wally’s problem is that he can’t get past denial. What he sees in the mirror isn’t what he sees in his mind. His photo reinforces his image of himself prior to the mutation. Since he can’t go back to what he used to be, he has two choices – keep running away from reality, or accept it. Having the photo aids him in running away. The only thing Holly could have done better was to create a “sending off ceremony” and let Wally do the dirty deed with his own hands. As it is, he’s lacking catharsis,
I agree she should have just handed it to him, that it would have been better for him to do it himself. She also knew he could not do it. So yes, it’s rude and it’s possible it will make him crazier. She might think keeping the photo around is what helps keep him crazy and getting rid of it might help his recovery. Lots to think about, no one is perfectly right, everyone does things that may not be the best course of action – these are reasons we like the strip, I think. :)

Six years of avoidance, casually drifting drifting out of your life…

I think someone needed to do what Holly did, to free Wally to live in the present…….

@PurpleDog39 (from yesterday): You were right! It is a boat.
But now Holly needs to follow up with affirmation of Wally as he is now. Can’t wait to see it play out!

I think this was wrong of her to do this. You don’t screw with a already disturbed person.

I bet it’s Holly’s way of saying. Except who you are now.
