A pun is a play on words. But specifically a pun is based on sound and/or familiarity between two like-sounding but different words.
Here he’s guilty of being literal, not punny.

I think it would have been better to just say, “After the composer killed her softly with his song,his wife bgan to DE-compose.” That’s much funnier.
