I still have a phone connection to my computer tho I have been on hi-speed for years. This allows me to use my computer address book to dial phone calls for me.
I remember when we had dial-up. Pain in the butt! Then we got call wave, which would pop up on the computer screen with the id of who was calling and gave you a choice to accept the call or decline it. That feature was neat, saved us from many a telemarketer!
I remember 12 years ago, we had dial-up at work with one extra (other than main office line and fax line) line for internet. You could sometimes getaway with using the fax line, but it was a trial-and-error approach to find out if either line was free (one could avoid mishaps to some extent, but not entirely, by winpopup-ping the office). I sure was glad when they finally got a wired (non-dialup) net.
Also can remember “FreeDSL” around 2000. Two annoying (one semi-tolerable) problems:
(*) big ads area (mandatory) at bottom of screen
(*) service hours 08:00-20:00 Pacific (unfortunately, I was using it from Atlanta area which is Eastern–so if net was down when I woke up in morning, basically no net for half the day)

Still have dial-up at work, so I don’t use the internet there. Talk about budget problems.

Us impatient codgers are using Fiber-Optic Cable with a Broadband connection.

I can relate - it literally took a hurricane relocation emergency to convince my elderly parents to finally make the switch from dialup.

Many nonPlugegrs are stuck on dialup too.
