Transcript:
Luann: ...And the gawky girl in the goofy gown won first princess in the beauty pageant! The end."
Luann: "iPhone storytime works pretty good"
Gunther: "Except the library hates you"
Describing herself as a gawky girl in a goofy gown is hardly bragging.Sounds as though she was turning it into some sort of ugly-duckling type fable, about being yourself, and coming out OK anyway. So to me, the story was fine, Luann, dear — but, as you work in the library, please set a good example and say “it works WELL.” Or am I the last grammar curmudgeon?
Actually, books are getting to be a rare item in school libraries. I was in my daughters Middle School library and where there used to be books, there are now between 20 and thirty computer stations. Her elementary school had more books. I heard a story on the news about on college that has no books in their library, Completely digital. In reality, they don’t even need to have a building, but they do.
I’m wondering why she still is discribing herself nagatively. She beat Tiff at her own game. She got the guy she wanted. Was there more she needed to do to be okay with herself?
@Mordock – I think if Gunther want’s to see this possible relationship with Rosa go anywhere; the worst thing he can do is let her see him in his Billy the Bookworm costume.
For those new to GoComics, trolls are dealt with in a couple of different ways. The bad English advertising ones get flagged by everyone and usually are removed pretty quickly. The vulgar and inappropriate ones can be slower to go away, but it’s the same process. (We frequently get comments on the trolls or their postings and they are already gone, which can get confusing.) The ones that are simple disagreements (no matter how dumb they may be) are usually left alone, even if flagged.
Little kids do like human interaction. IMO Luann has made it into a version of the ugly duckling. She is still being shown as a bit low on self esteem, a long-term trait. // Quill should be able to tweak that up some, though.
Lewreader, no it does not. It someone who posts to simply posts to annoy other posters. Just a very negative person really does it only to stir up people.
susan, I’m a strict grammarian, also. But I myself was caught just the other day, by a friend from New Jersey. It’s kind of a Midwestern thing to answer the question, “What did you do today?” by saying “Me and Dave went fishing.” And I should know better. But that’s the way I’ve said it all my life. That’s the way it’s said around here. I usually have a kind of radar when it comes to grammar. But that one sounded so right, that it really slipped by the radar…

I thought that was pretty good……the kids loved it! They can relate to the “gawky girl”….

The clientele loved it! Most libraries, at least in my experience, are embracing the Digital Age, so Gunther’s grump doesn’t ring true to me….

And BTW I thought Gunther was just making a little joke. Cos it’s a comic strip and all.

I see the trolls have discovered the strip again.

@Diver Dan – When a teen girl is fishing for complements, she won’t do it with a bunch of little kids.

I referenced “irony” in my last post, which was ironic. Sorry.

I saw the Trolls were back, but don’t worry they will be quickly dealt with.

LadyF — I think that’s why she said she won First Princess, not Queen. Otto, wow, that’s ironic. Oh…wait…is that off topic again? :)

Damn, and I left my pitchfork and torches dirty… Burning iphones looks cool but the toxic fumes can be lethal.

I’ll take a real book over an iphone and ipads ANY day.

Just wait until the story is published in Kindle…

Times…they sure are a changing ….I like like the new e- readers and the feel of real books. Just a matter of preference .

Why are you all arguing about a comic strip?? Do you believe it is real life?? Are any of you adults? The key word is “COMIC”. For entertainment!!

The more I look at it, that dress reminds me of the cake left out in the rain in the song MacArther Park. All that sweet green icing flowing down…

And never did I mention that they did not agree with me that is their right.

Good catch, Susansunshine! I’m a stickler on grammar too; even in comic strips. People imitate what they here and see.

Re: trolls. No one named anyone by name, but they seem to know who they are.
