    As far as skills: In the late 40s, REA was coming to our area. Up till then, washing machines were driven by Maytag gasoline engines. As households replaced them with electric motors, kids found ingeneous ways to put the Maytag engines on bicycles and belt drives to rear wheel. Usually, one pedalled harder to start the engine, though some even fashioned clutches. Could any kids today do that, (without a ready made kit of parts?) NOTE: Poorer people were still using scrub boards at that time.
