This is the problem when care for the poor (hospitality if you will) is professionalized. All the things you read about in stories like Little Women are useless. However, the one thing even a well run welfare program (I’ve seen that only once in my life, and is wasn’t the feds) can’t provide is a friend.
NotNormanChubsyUbsy says: “I hate to be the Grinch but the Army pays a $100,000.00 death benefit for the members killed in action, so what did the grieving widow do with that 100 grand?”
Two possibilities come to mind:
1) The kid might not be aware of the death benefit. She lost her daddy, and her mom lost her husband. They might not be in a state of mind to think about the payment. If the payment has been delayed through some bureaucratic process, it is possible her mom isn’t aware of it.
I’m with NormanCW on this one. If Daddy was killed in Iraq Momma has much more than 100K coming to her, the SGLI death benefit has increased considerably in recent years. The Beetle Bailey, leather boot days of the Army have been over since before Viet Nam. This is either a scam or someone didnt do their homework before they wrote this storyline.

A) It’s just a comic
B) What’s the timeframe of the story? Is it “today”
C) Some of you are missing the point

I’m glad Clovia has turned around from her sourpuss attitude on 12/13.
