Thanks to the fine folks at Drawn & Quarterly, I was able to open up “Walt & Skeezix, Vol. 3,” and see exactly what was going on in the strip at the end of 1925.
Walt and Skeezix were in Florida, where Walt had gone after a misunderstanding with Phyllis (they weren’t married yet). Doc and Avery were down there, too, looking to cash in on the real-estate boom going on at the time.
The 12/31/25 strip was Avery and Squint talking about building lots. The 1/1/26 strip was Walt running into Avery, Squint and Doc, all of whom were suffering the aftereffects of their New Year’s celebrations (Squint: “Were you along on the party, Walt? I can’t remember.”). In the final panel, Walt says, “Well, I’ve got this crowd of swelled heads beaten this morning. I went to bed and trusted Nature to usher in the new year!”
The hardcovers begin the day Walt found Skeezix on his doorstep. From the small sampling of later strips I’ve read, I would vote to start a classic on-line series c. 1935. Skeezix and Nina begin their courtship.
The best thing about the classic Gasoline Alley strips were the Sunday pages. Too bad the newspapers couldn’t reprint them the same size. THAT would be so great!!
But a “Classics” Gasoline Alley is just what the world needs. Look at how many other strips are being reprinted.

I like when we go “back in time” with Skeezix and Walt. I wish it would happen more often.

I LOVE this comic - but I agree - we need to see more of Skeezix and Walt and revisit some of those important memories.

Yes, let’s see Skeezix and family from the 1940’s when I first started reading them each Sunday. Possible? Bruce Whittles
