Jim S. made a rare grammatical error. In the second panel, ‘bout (short for “about”) should have an apostrophe, not an opening quotation mark. But this is happening more and more everywhere.

I don’t know whether you’ve noticed or not, but word processors routinely use the opening single quote if it’s not preceded by text. (If I’m posting, I place the apostrophe where I want it.)

Not a problem, in any case. But I did enjoy the Gertie and Earl stream, regardless of the fact that so many people had nothing better to do than carp about it.

Apostrophes and question marks were in the right place on my computer. But sometimes e-mails replace puntuation marks with ampersands and other symobls. Looks like comic strip cussing!

If Pastor Present was going to ask a favor, he has a chance to change his mind and probably will.

The part in Pastor Presents hair changed between the first & third panels. Slim will do that to you!

bassmanbob said, “The part in Pastor Presents hair changed between the first & third panels. Slim will do that to you!”

I suspect the 3rd panel depicts the image in the mirror across the room from the Pastor’s chair, and that Slim has only caused him to switch the phone to his other ear.

I was reminded of Earl and Gertie by some of the earlier posts today, and it occurred to me that the story as it stands is in the James Joyce Dubliners vein. Gertie’s refusal of Earl can be seen as a “paralysis” of the sort that Joyce depicts. I am especially reminded of one of his short stories from the collection (can’t remember the title— Dypak?), wherein a woman who is basically the servant of her father and brothers is set to leave Ireland for America with a man who loves her. But at the last moment, she cannot board the ship. She is unable to take the step toward happiness, and misses her chance.

Of course, the story may just be paused, but it is interesting to me that Jim didn’t go immediately to the happy ending. God, I loved that story.

Eveline is the story you’re thinking of. It is lovely, and similar—- to this point.

Excuse me everyone for mentioning this but I have become much distressed over the changes that have been made on this site. These subtle new changes in fact have infuriated me.. I am protesting these changes. Comicspage, com was wonderful in years past but ever since the so called facebook set up took over it has become irritating to me. I won’t give details but I am going to communicate my many complaints to the powers that be.

    436rgw - just don’t pay them! That’ll teach ‘em!

Please note the carefully placed punctuation marks.

It won’t be too long before text messages, email, blogs finish the job TV advertising did on the written English language. We’ll all be reading icons soon enough.

There is actually an aesthetic reason for that mirror image. From both directions Pastor Present is facing into the comic strip rather than off the page, drawing the reader’s attention away. It’s an old newspaper rule.

Crunkbot, what you say is true, but there’s a big difference in constructive criticism and tedious whining.

I don’t think this is intended to be a forum for serious reviews, though there are often thoughtful and intelligent posts. I think the comment section is for the entertainment of readers, offered because advertisers like to see us coming back again and again.
