I love that sign out front. Now my church has hymnals and Bibles in the pew (though I prefer to bring my own Bible) but telling you to bring your pocketbook is rather obvious!
I’m afraid I have to agree with NotNormanSulkyFrowny. Probably not for the same reason though. I think the message gets lost when churches start making money. I’ve seen ministers get fired because they couldnt get the money rolling in fast enough to suit the people running the church. I’ll even go NotNorman one step further. So many churches are in fact businesses and should be taxed accordingly.

(Person in church parking lot, reading sign.) “I’ve got my Bible and my Hymnal. But things have been hard lately and the checkbook is empty. Hope I’m still welcome.”
Norman, God doesn’t need our money, but it is useful in today’s society. If we didn’t give generously and cheerfully, where do you think the medical clinics, food banks and other such things would come from?
I will agree with you that blatant greed is rampant in some churches, especially the TV and radio preachers, but for a local congregation, giving (if not tithing) is essential to the upkeep of the church including mortgage payments, utilities, salaries and the aforementioned charitable outreaches.
All Tithed the increase giving the Levites a tithe of the tithe . The Levites tithed their tithe for Temple maintenance . After all the fast tithing they ALL sat down to a Tithe potluck and eat ALL the tithe . Three times a year .
Deuteronomy 14 is the story . A little more to it than that but basically that’s it .

Sure, that twenty gets the ball rolling, but then Slim ends up giving nothing each week.
