Is the villain a military man? From the appearance of his collar it would appear he is wearing a uniform and also appears to be wearing a kepi, or cap of some sort.
I often hear posters on this forum refer to “the other board”. Is there another forum for discussing this strip? If so, could someone post the URL if it is a public board?
Ludwig, B.O. passed by the Tax Office in the casino for a little “Change you can believe in”. They changed his 2 bags of change into one bag. Is this guy a rendition of Errol Flynn?
Thanks LeonBeon59 for the link which included some still to be printed, early April 2009 strips.
As Grok has noted it’s a recycling of the “playing card” theme we saw with Big Boomsie Queenie and Royal Flush in early 2007. What is a crashing disappointment is Locher is a partner to using the “One-Eyed Jack” name AGAIN ! That was Flush’s chief henchman who wore an eye patch and threw the “Blue Eye of Mondazzi” diamond through Tracy’s window on 3-03-07. That was a Locher written story, Doesn’t he remember the name? Has his mind driffted so much out of focus that he can’t remember a simple thing like that? The identical name already used two years ago? As a “professional” doesn’t the man feel any SHAME at having his “name” appearing on this infantile work? Do the Editors feel this kindergarten stuff is all, “A-OK” as long as there is NO gun-play or anything else to “censor” to get the day’s high?
Or re-using the same names, they had their own “Mr. Wheels” twice! Copied Collins’ “Iceman” with Ice Man and Gould’s “The Chameleon” with the identical name. Seems if a name is good “use it twice”.
When will we have Flattop and Mrs. Pruneface again?
If what we are seeing is Bronzman’s art (?) he certainly has copied Lochers “style” very accurately. Why not pattern it instead after Gould?
Can’t say I take to the villain design. And the story as it seems to be going is rather juvenile, that is, let the customers win so we can later rob them (“Tell me Mr. Plenty where do you keep all your money?”). Seems to be generally following the theme from his interview (B.O. wins then robbed)
Poor Dick, he hasn’t been to office since mid December 2008. He works like a Private Eye now. Out of his home.
This is starting to remind me of a (1985 “revival” version) Twilight Zone episode, where Mare Winningham is given a box with a butto–and told (by a sinister-looking bald man) that if she presses it, “someone she doesn’t know will die” and she’ll get $1,000,000. Her husband takes apart the box to find out what’s in it and finds nothing; eventually, she presses the button.
Next morning, the bald man returns with a briefcase containing $1,000,000 and “assures” the couple that the death occured. He then tells them (ominous conclusion) that the button-unit will be reprogrammed and given to someone “who doesn’t know” them.
wndrwrthg, I think the villain is a military wannadabe (“wanted to be”, but got rejected), a group which included an erstwhile dictator of Iraq (who almost always wore camos and beret for public appearances).
LOCHER, DEALING FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE DECK OR RECYCLING THE ‘SAME’ CARDS ?
The closer I look the more I realize readers can’t win. We’re being dealt the same “hand” again by Dick Locher (Was Jim there when the game started?):
2009 / 2007
CASINOS / CASINOS
Big Ace(big boss) / Royal Flush(big boss)
One-Eyed Jack / One-Eyed Jack (II)
Spade /‘Baldy’ Spade
Trump /?? (Donald or dealer ?)
Then, I guess if we’re determined to have an ENCORE, Queenie will have to undergo a “Sal Monella” style resurrection. (Locher/Kilian perfected the process for the comics Industry). Only question is, this time, will the bumpsy stick in the Tug Boat chimney?
bassnanbob, where is your 3 card shuffle trick ? We are waiting ! Has Jim’s arrival trumped YOUR Ace?
Ludwig, Thanks fo the link. Every thing we get keeps adding up the total of information on the issue. One where I get the feel that every one who “knows” is being cagey.
One source described Brozman as being a part-time “ink man”. To my unpractised eye Locher still does the main art, the Lilliputian hands speak to you saying “I was pencilled in by Locher”
The presentation of the Villain IS classic Locher style, but the design seems a bit of a contradiction. Fine waxed Spanish mustache and dressed like a moneyed Hippie.

Man. This is way over my head. How do I get selected for this “villainous plan”? I could surely do with some extra money.

The villian resembles Smilin’ Jack.
