Even when it grew dark and late, Annie would not give up, and she went farther and farther away from home in her search. Mr. Futile followed close behind her with a lantern, but, as usual, he did not believe that they would succeed. “But Annie,” he protested, “It’s useless to keep on looking. You’ve eaten hardly a bite for three days. Come on home to supper.”“If I don’t find Sandy,” said Annie in a choked voice, “I don’t think I’ll ever care to eat again.” Suddenly Annie reached for the lantern. “I’ve been by here a hundred times,” she said. “There are no tracks, but I’ll have a look in that yard just th’ same. Let me take the lantern.”Annie went into the yard and looked around the deserted house.“I suppose it’s useless, but – Oh – OH – OH – SANDY!” Annie was almost screaming now.A brown tail was projecting from under the edge of a heavy bush, and when Annie looked closer she saw what it was. Poor Sandy! And in what a state!Mr. Futile was over the fence in a moment. “Why, he’s dead, isn’t he?” he asked peering into the depths of the bush.But Annie would not have it so. “No,” she denied. “He can’t be. Don’t just stand there! Help me pick him up and get him across th’ street to doc’s. Hurry!” And as they began to move him, she added, “Easy, now!”Sandy was stretched on the operating table in the doctor’s office, while the doctor deftly examined and bandaged him. “Oh, doc,” said Little Annie. “He can’t die. You won’t let him die, will you, doc?”“Hm-n-m,” said the doctor. “Well, not if I can help it, of course, Annie. But you mustn’t hope for too much.” After a while the kindly doctor sent Annie away. “Now, Annie,” he told her, “Everything is being done that can be done. I’ll keep Sandy right here tonight. You go along home and eat.” He patted Annie on the shoulder and continued, “Then you can come back and help watch him tonight.”“Gee, Doc!” exclaimed Annie, as she left the office. “You’re a swell guy.”In the meantime, Mrs. Futile had been trying to keep supper warm for Annie and Mr. Futile, and when they finally reached home, she had the meal on the table in a jiffy.“But how did Sandy ever get hurt, and how did he happen to be in the yard?” she wanted to know.But Annie hadn’t had time to figure that out yet. “He’s in awful bad shape,” she said. “Doc Dose is sure doin’ all he can. I’m goin’ back again right after supper.“You say Doctor Dose operated on Sandy?” questioned Mrs. Futile. “Why, he’s not just an ordinary dog doctor.”And while Annie tried to eat, she answered, “I’ll say he isn’t. And Sandy isn’t just an ordinary dog, either.”
After Mobutu’s military coup, Lumumba attempted to escape to Stanleyville to join his supporters who had established a new anti-Mobutu rival state called the Free Republic of the Congo. Lumumba was captured and imprisoned en route by state authorities under Mobutu. He was handed over to Katangan authorities, and executed in the presence of Katangan and Belgian officials and officers. His body was thrown into a shallow grave, but later dug up and destroyed.4 Following his execution, he was widely seen as a martyr for the wider pan-African movement. Over the years, inquiries have shed light on the events surrounding Lumumba’s death and, in particular, on the roles played by Belgium and the United States.4 In 2002, Belgium formally apologized for its role in the execution.5 In 2022, a gold-capped tooth, all that remained of his body, was repatriated to the Democratic Republic of the Congo by Belgium.6
