Good Morning Annie Fans!LITTLE ORPHAN ANNIE AND SANDYBy Harold Gray, 1933CHAPTER 7 – Annie On the TrailThe morning after poor Sandy had been found, Annie put on her boots and went out, without saying a word to anyone. She wanted to see for herself just how Sandy had been hurt. When she came to the deserted house, she stopped and looked over the fence. “Right in there, under that bush, is where I found Sandy,” she thought. “And there were no tracks, and it hadn’t snowed since he disappeared.”Annie looked closely at the sidewalk and the road beyond. “That means he was tossed in there. Doc says an auto must have hit him. Almost every bone in his body was busted, but even so, it couldn’t have knocked him clear over the fence.”Still puzzling over how Sandy could have been hidden under the bush, Annie walked along the sidewalk, watching carefully for tracks in the snow. Suddenly she came upon something that made her stop and stare.“Ah, here we are!” she cried. “Tracks clear up onto the sidewalk! Whoever it was must have meant to hit him. And this is ‘most a block from where I found him.”Annie continued her inspection. The sidewalk showed noting, but on the boards of the fence, there were some dark brown spots. She bent down to look at them. “Blood,” she decided. “Here’s a drop of blood still on this fence. I get it now. He was hit here, and whoever it was, carried him away from here and tossed him into that bush for dead.” Annie was very angry indeed.

I like how Jay and Alan add their by-line to the big front window. Kinda like a big mural ad for the muffler business.

Maybe they should have gotten the press on their side to keep it quiet till they are done. Not uncommon in the US of A.
