LITTLE ORPHAN ANNIE AND SANDYBy Harold Gray, 1933CHAPTER 17 – Almost Well Again
One day there was a celebration in the little city where Annie lived. It was a beautiful warm day with only a little snow on the ground when Annie took Sandy out on the street for the first time. Soon a crowd of people gathered about Annie and her dog – Tom Take was there, Pete Pincher the cop, Mr. Pinchpenny, and many other people who came into the store. “My, my, my,” said an old lady, “Sandy is walking.”
And another one added, “Why, he’s not even going to be lame.”
Annie said happily to the people around her, “See, folks, he’s all well, ‘cept for that bandage on his left hind leg.”
And Tom Take, who had his own reasons for doing it, echoed, “Yep, just that bandage on his left hind leg.”
But Sandy had to be very careful these first days, and in a few minutes Annie was helping him back into the sled in which she had brought him from home. “Here! I’ll help you lift him back into his sled, Annie,” said Tom Take, and added when Sandy was tucked safely in the sled again: “He’s not as heavy as a certain iron dog I know.” Everyone else was gone by this time, so it was safe for them to talk about the iron dog.
On the way home, she told Sandy, “Well, Sandy, somethin’ tells me that by the time you get so you can run around again, this town is goin’ to be a lot safer for everybody.”
David, the Stockholm Syndrome is, according to Wikipedia, “a term used to describe a real paradoxical psychological phenomenon wherein hostages express empathy and have positive feelings towards their captors; sometimes to the point of defending them.”
So, in the Hearst case, she supposedly went even further in her positive feelings to the point of joining them. It’s not too dissimilar from abused spouses who attack the cops who try to arrest their abuser!
