today’s strip begins our emotional goodbye to a character. in real life, lezley’s collie lady passed away may 10th after a long life filled with fun and love. she will be sorely missed in the strip and our lives. there are empty places in our home and our hearts that will never be the same.
We lost our little Sheltie Champ over 2 years ago and I still miss him every day. He died to soon but the joy our pets give us will last forever. I feel your family’s pain, you have my sympathy.
So sorry for the loss of your Collie. Our dogs aren’t much different than human family members and there will always be that sense of loss but more important are the lessons of love they teach us. If you’ve never read “The Rainbow Bridge” poem you should read it now, it will help. It’s easy to find in a google search. Again, sorry for your loss.
Just this side of the Summerlands is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
I love the thought of the Rainbow Bridge. I sure hope that it’s true. I have lost many cats and dogs and would truly like to see them again on the other side…
it is always the love that brings such joy, that , when gone , at first brings such pain. but after the pain , the love lives on forever in our hearts.
I am so sorry dear – I know this pain and it is raw, but know that you will meet again across the Rainbow Bridge and she will always be with you, only a heartbeat away – hugs
So very very sorry about your loss. Those of us who love animals experience this too often and it is heartbreaking. That pet is never forgotten, always in our hearts. Perhaps your comic strip could advocate for no-kill shelters and rescues and eventually the family could adopt a sweet furry angel seeking a new fur-ever home. That would be awesome! You can never replace any pet, but you can open your hearts and home to save another angel. We lost two older pets within a month and now we have 5 rescues – and they really are so grateful for the chance to give us their unconditional love. They keep us very busy so not as much time is left for grieving and crying…..Thank goodness we have our old photos and memories, and we’re creating new ones.

Thank you for sharing your personal loss. Many of your readers, myself included, know what it’s like to lose a four-legged family member.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….
