The cartoon states that deficit reduction has cut its own leaders or that it fails from broken leadership. It indicts deficit reduction plans like Representative Ryan’s and all the federal government’s leaders, Democrat & Republican.
Real “leadership” would be eliminating tax breaks, raising income, and yes, lowering spending levels, like for defense, oil company subsidies, farm subsidies, and all subsidies for building or growing “stuff” we don’t critically need that we can’t produce.
I guess you didn’t read the news. The commission he set up had four neocons and two moderates. Their main idea was, of course, to cut taxes on the very wealthy and to cut social programs to off set those tax breaks.
When you say cut farm subsidies, do you realize that over half of the farm subsidy goes to food stamps? And that another 25% goes to Forestry? Only about 3% of that budget gets to the farmer. Some years he needs it, some he doesn’t. I would think the farmers in Missouri and south would rather appreciate it this year.
The problem is the permanent funds being funneled to corporate farms that produce corn and a few other major crops. I have no problem with federal insurance for floods and crop losses, I do have a problem with shovelling money into corporations regardless of whether their product is profitable.

More like the tax reduction committee. Just ask Alan Simpson.
