I wonder what time Earl will go on. I’m in the mood for some blues harmonica, and I could probably make it to the Savoy tonight. I saw the great blues guitarist Ronnie Earl at a small venue last fall, and it was like going to church. Very expressive, soulful preaching with a guitar. Blues with strength… not pointlessly complaining blues, but struggling blues, looking for the light blues, blues with the understanding that we’ll find the way out. That is a great drawing of Bird. You get a great sense of the atmosphere of this place, very believable.

I wish that no smoking laws would leave places like this alone. I don’t smoke, never have. But I think smoking bans do more harm to basic human freedoms than smoking does to people’s health. If we take away the little, unpopular things first then taking the bigger freedoms later on is much easier. It’s crazy to impose fascism on ourselves because it is ‘healthy’.

Dypak, I agree. I can see banning it in places like schools where kids don’t have any choice about being there, or hospitals, airplanes and the like. But a place like a club, people have a choice to work there or even set foot in the door. Why not let the businesses themselves decide whether they want to allow it, and let the customers choose where they want to go?
Actually, I find this story arc more interesting than anything GA has done in ages. I think Scancarelli has finally tired of Walt and Co. (and the same old tired jokes) and decided to go off into spinoff-land for awhile with these two interesting characters. My advice is just to relax and enjoy the ride.

Smoking isn’t allowed in public places where I live. Bars are easier to take now. All the smokers go outside.
