Gasoline Alley by Jim Scancarelli for September 24, 2009

I am really enjoying this story, the start seemed fitful but the last week or so there have been some really good strips, and now I’m all wondering what’s gonna happen next with Gertie and Bird and poor old Walt back in there.

Now, will “Angel Eyes” get to hear Byrd play “Angel Eyes”?

Panel one is very evocative. Scancarelli’s Gasoline Alley connects me to a vanishing world.

Where’ s Walt??? His ticket was also a fake.

I was hoping Byrd would see Gertie being “escorted” to the door and intervene.

Terry told Gertie that Byrd sent comp tickets to “all of us at Corky’s Diner.” If Jim is following continuity (a BIG “if”), and Corky enjoys jazz, that means Corky might be there, too.

So, he can rescue his father, insist that Skeezix fire Gertie, and arrange to have Eve come back and take over as Walt’s live-in caregiver. Oh, boy!

Hey Axe, I think you used the wrong tense there. Sorry, I’m afraid it’s already vanished. Except for here. It’d be nice to see Byrd run out the theater and chase Gertie down.

I like the thought of Walt up on stage, doing a showtune.

That would be so funny, Walt keeping the crowd entertained.

Once in a while I still see something like the Octane in the real world, and realize I need to savor it. Will people someday be nostalgic for Walmart and McDonalds?

Is that really a poster for Britny Spears “coming soon?”

I have been reading this since thye forties and didn’t know the town was called Gasoline Alley , I thought it was just the name of the Garage.

The word on the street is that Bird has a new young bride …

There was a discussion about this recently, and I think the consensus was that originally the GA name referred to the area (behind their houses) wherein Walt and his pals tinkered with their autos, then referred to the Garage, and (relatively) recently has been applied to the whole town or community.

You’ve seen a lot of GA! What do you think have been the most memorable or highlights among the GA stories/episodes you’ve read?

Memorable? I personally vote for the introduction of Rover back in the 80s…partly because it’s among the few bits that’s available in book form. But it’s also a very cute, well-knit and even poignant story.
