Sixty years ago today, 22 June 1951, the last of the laws against witchcraft in the UK were repealed, ending legal repressions that began in 1583. This means that it took the British only three more years to realize that witches were harmless than it took the Catholic Church to admint that Galileo was right.
Bellarmine’s position was that heliocentrism was acceptable as a theoretical construct for purposes of experimentation and calculation but not as a description of reality. However, I was not referring to the original judgement against Galileo (or its validity), but the length of time it took the Catholic Church to admit it was wrong.
