Big Nate by Lincoln Peirce for June 27, 2011
Transcript:
Ready for the Social Studies final? Yup! Ready to get a hundred! Oh, please! You'll be lucky to pass! Pass? Oh, I'll pass, Gina... ...Just like the Sherman Antitrust Act, which was passed on July 2nd, 1890, marking the beginning of the government's effort to restrict monopolies. Wha...? So shut up.

Yes, I did follow comics.com and recognize your name from there. I know you’ve been a loyal reader for a long time, and I appreciate it! (And I like your Little Lulu avatar.)

Hope Nate’s new-found knowledge will match the long-standing self-conceit. I want to see him succeed, but it’s seldom wise to boast in advance…

I tried a lot of different ideas back when I was just starting out as a cartoonist, and eventually an editor gave me the good advice to just write about what I knew best. So I submitted a comic strip called “Neighborhood Comix,” loosely based on the neighborhood where I grew up in New Hampshire. Nate was one of the characters in “Neighborhood Comix,” but he looked and acted different from the way he is now. Over time I made changes, Nate became the main character…and I re-named the strip “Big Nate.” That’s how the strip first got published, back in January of 1991.

I hope this is a beginning of a storyline where Gina starts to stalk Nate. Would be hilarious!
bignate creator over 13 years ago
Well said! The fact is, I’ve forgotten most of the history I learned as a kid. When I’m writing social studies jokes for the strip, I always consult my “World Almanac & Book of Facts” to make sure I’m getting all the right information in there.

Oh good one.
arson549 over 13 years ago
How come Spitzy hasn’t appeared in this strip for quite a while? Is he coming in a near storyline?
bignate creator over 13 years ago
I do, too! But you never know when it could happen. Thanks to the success of the Big Nate chapter books, the strip is finding its way into more newspapers.

I love reading Big Nate in the summer. And WHY is the archive gone? I loved to go back in 2000 and read every single Big Nate strip there is. Will they bring back the archive?

The Sherman Antitrust Act was very important. It was made for corporate giants to have less power, although it actually made the problem much worse, mainly because it was very poorly written. It included striking as illegal because of that, making it impossible for laborers to form labor unions if the employers are abusing their power. This was also during a time of laissez-faire, meaning the government didn’t have much control over the large businesses. Pretty bad times.
