LOL! Actually, the first job might not be bad. I guess it depends on if you like elderly men, and snakes..although not necessarily in that particular order.

I kinda sorta think Brad has to carry his search further than just sitting in front of the computer. What about flipping burgers? Or drying/polishing cars at the local car-wash?

Last frame should have been “Earn praise while assisting a well known cartoonist making sure he meets his deadlines in a timely manner… must be willing to take blame for missed deadlines when they occur because the cartoonist is too busy playing Wii”

Maybe Brad could take a course and become a Licensed Practical Nurse. His Paramedic training will give him a head start.

@ Sideshow Starlet -Those “addressing envelopes” ads are usually scams. Brad hasn’t been unemployed long enough to not be picky, although the suggestion of going back to school to be a nurse – LPN or RN, isn’t a bad idea.

Yeah, it’s lucky for Brad right now that he IS a cartoon.Sure, he could go through police training, or nursing school, or train for another career. If he has the money for school. Most grants are cancelled right now.And there ARE no jobs for the graduates, and not just in Pittsville! Police, fire, schools, hospitals - all are experiencing hiring freezes. Employees who leave are not replaced. By the time cities and counties can finally afford to start hiring policemen again, Brad can go back to being a fireman.Meanwhile, yes, he can get unemployment after a few weeks, but at half his salary or less.Maybe he could scrape by, but not pay half the rent on a house, not around here, anyway. And it runs out after 6 months. In California the Horner house would go for about $2000 a month. His parents may be charging them less - but then again, their mortgage payment is probably more. And if he gets a job in retail, or flipping burgers, it’s at minimum wage, for about 20 hours a week, so they don’t have to provide benefits. That’s $640 a month here, and they take away your unemployment cos you’re employed. That’s why some people have 3 jobs.Paramedics don’t make much more, though they may get more hours. In any case, if you do the math, it isn’t pretty. I advise him to stay in the Luann strip.

Nobody else in the world had manufacturing in the’50’s. We were just recovering from WW2 and every other industrial powerhouse had been pretty much ruined. Also nothing wrong with Walmart as it sells a lot of the same products that are sold elsewhere but it also buy’s in enough volume that people who could never have nice things before can now afford them. Which is why most Americans have more than most of the rest of the world. After growing up poor in the ’50’s I like living were anybody can have nice stuff, Nobody is forced to shop there, and if you believe all that about the Republicans (not discounting the RINO’s of course) then you haven’t paid attention to the money trail. Follow who got the Stimulus money and who is paying into campaign coffers.

Better cast your net a little further out, Brad. Staying in Pittsville sounds like the pits. I’m sure if you look outside of your own town, you can find a fire fighter job.

Brad – now that you’ve covered the jobs that require NO training and are usually reserved for illegal immigrants, time to moveonand look ofr a fire fighter job. You know Pittsville doesn’t have any, so check the rest of the county, then the state. Where I live, most people commute in excess of an hour to get to work.

Brad, take the money from TJ as a loan, rent a garage somwhere and start a car repair-restoration business. You are handy with cars and so is Toni. She could help on time off as she is good with cars too. Hmmm, here I am talking to Brad like he is a real person….. Keep forgetting this is a cartoon.

hmm.. well why can’t Brad be a VOLUNTEER at the Firehouse? and take training to be a paramedic since he has the fire-fighting background — they work closely together at times, right?

I’d like Brad to sign-up with the forest service for the summer fire season. He’d get experience fighting forest fires, giving him added experience, and stay in the profession. He’d come back his body buff and lean and a real physical specimen .

Very few farm subsidies go to farmers. Most goes to planters. (Corporate farms formerly called plantations.) Farmers, by definition, are free enterprise, not capitalist or feudal.

The longer this goes without some mention of Unemployment Compensation, the sillier the story line appears. Sure he can be looking for jobs and worrying about the future, but it is hard to believe that someone either at the firehouse, or his parents or someone else wouldn’t just tell him to sign up. Not to mention the prospect of getting called back when the next person retires or leaves.

I think it would be funny if Brad took a substitute job at Luann’s school, you know filling in for sick teachers. That would bring more bonding between the two and probably some embarassing and funny moments. Greg probably doesn’t take any ideas from fans so I don’t expect it to happen but it would open new doors to the relationship between brother and sister.

Maybe my first post was too long. So, more briefly…..THERE ARE NO JOBS as firefighters, nurses, substitute teachers, or forest rangers. Not in the next city, county or state, either.Almost ALL are suffering lay-offs and hiring freezes right now, and will re-hire their OWN workers for openings.Just cos we didn’t watch Brad sign up for unemployment doesn’t mean he won’t. It wouldn’t start till next month, at less than HALF his salary, and only lasts 26 weeks.Working in retail, fast food, or as a paramedic is usually limited to part time at not much over minimum wage — that’s even less than his unemployment and won’t pay his rent.Good thing he has a job with Greg.

LOL! I’m pretty sure Tiffany (or at least her parents) are rich, considering her endless supply of makeup and her designer wardrobe. I can’t see her even knowing what a “Republican” is, though. I just can’t see Tiff having conservative values.

@Sideshow StarletTiffany MIGHT be a blueblood Republican, but not definitely not a conservative. Incidentally, I’m also a small-business owner, so this hasn’t been just me talking about things I have no vested interest/experience in.

To address the greed comment further up, greed for its own sake is, yes, bad. But doing things in your own interest (or your family’s) is not. Ask yourself… why do you go to work? Is it to make sure your company has quality products or services and make the customers happy? I’m sure it is in part. But ask yourself… would you do it for free? Why should any part of the economy, large or small, operate differently?

True. I just assumed from the way they are drawn that they’re more expensive than what all the other girls at Pitts High are wearing. And Luann bought her car used from saving up from her job, not because her parents are rich. From what I’ve read of the archived strips, I never saw Tiffany with a car, but that could be because she was never able to pass the test to get a driver’s license.
