All comments on “Calvin and Hobbes” in everyone’s bio have an identical “Calvin” avatar to identify which strip they are commenting on. It’s done automatically by the GoComics system. And no, I don’t work for GoComics. If some of your comments were deleted in the past, it’s because other readers on this site flagged them. Flagging a comment does not automatically delete it. The comment is reviewed by someone at GoComics and they decide whether or not it is appropriate.
Unfortunately, this really isn’t a democracy, as gocomics controls the mike. And they have chosen to set limits on what they will accept for comments.Of course, even in our national dialogue, the Supreme Court has decided that some language is not protected—such as “FIRE!” in a crowded theater.
The First Amendment was never intended to put all kinds of speech on the same level. It was intended to let truth, reason and civility win out over falsehood, fallacies and such things as slander and libel without arbitrary governmental interference. It gives human nature a lot more credit than it deserves, but such was the naivete of the rationalism of the times. As John Adams pointed out, the Constitution was meant for a moral and religious people and suited for none other. If people don’t govern themselves then inevitably its provisions will be perverted for selfish and immoral ends.Bottiom line: the Constitution can’t tell you how to censor yourself. It assumes that you’ll have the grace, training and common sense to do so.
It’s taken for granted that yelling “FIRE” in a crowded theater which is not on fire is the intent of the quote. Obvioulsy one would call attention to a real fire if one saw it.

The TigerWilliam Blake
Tiger tiger, burning bright,In the forests of the night; What immortal hand or eyeCould frame thy fearful symmetry?
In what distant deeps or skiesBurnt the fire of thine eyes?On what wings dare he aspire? What the hand dare seize the fire?
And what shoulder, and what artCould twist the sinews of thy heart? And when thy heart began to beat,What dread hand, and what dread feet?
What the hammer, what the chain? In what furnace was thy brain? What the anvil? what dread graspDare its deadly terrors clasp?
When the stars threw down their spearsAnd watered heaven with their tears:Did he smile his work to see?Did he who made the lamb make thee?
Tiger tiger burning bright,In the forests of the night:What immortal hand or eyeDare frame thy fearful symmetry?

If the radio is playing when his father gets back, Calvin can blame it on Rod Serling….
