That letter is from 1995. I remember the final strip on a December Sunday. My gf at the time thought I was nuts for being so sad. Needless to say – we eventually learned we didn’t belong together…
First, Would it be safe to guess this was the last comic offered and being such posting this letter only serves to once again put a point on what in this case is something that has already happened?
Either a child neglect case or the inspiration for a series of blockbuster movies starring an incredibly annoying child actor right here (wonder who inspired who)
Especially CALVIN????I know a lot of men fantasize about being :eaten alive", but that’s going a bridge or three too far and especially for a six-year-old and an innocent tiger.
@bmonk,There are a couple (no ‘of’ necessary) things here “up with which I will not put”. The superfluous ‘of’ is one. The other thing is leaving Calvin “Home Alone” for two hours.I hope Dad and Mom have the appropriate parental controls in place. Calvin can watch Caillou for example, and Dragon Tales for thrilling escapades.
Why is it that females are called ‘co-eds’? As though they’re some kind of accessory to the normally-male college population? Why aren’t guys called co-eds?
This happened almsot 20 years ago. None of the comics you have been reading are new. In fact you can find them in Calvin and Hobbes anthology books in any good book store. Whoever posted this should check the date it was originally written.
To “TCayer”, I suggest you consider there is another side to this story. Bill Watterson worked for many years, and suffered many setbacks, before he hit upon these characters and this wonderful hook. Then he put all of his energy and imagination into keeping this comic strip head and shoulders above the gag-a-day strips on the same page. When Garfield was cashing in on merchandising, you never saw a Calvin or Hobbes doll. That’s because Bill concentrated on the “art”. How can we not respect this? In the end, he tired of fighting off his syndicate and those who wanted to get rich from his passion.
If reading Calvin and Hobbes doesn’t give much joy and Bill Watterson brings such disdain, it might be best to not read the comic to avoid the pain. (Kind of like telling a doctor that it hurts when a finger is bent severely in the opposite direction. The doctor is going to say ‘Stop bending the finger that way’ and then charge an office fee).
The last Calvin strip was a sunday comic ending with “let’s go exploring” — which was quoted in the final strip of “Boondocks” and the final strip of “The Big Picture.”
Wow, this is so old, not only did movies come on video tape, but they didn’t own a VCR, and had to rent one! Reminds me of WKRP in Cincinnati, when someone asked Jennifer if she had a VCR, and she said she had two — a sign of her extreme wealth! (I hope my VCR keeps going until I’ve finished dubbing all my old tapes to DVD-R…)
I can not believe that Calvin’s parents are actually allowing Calvin to stay home alone. They will be lucky to still have an intact house left upon their return.
@tcayer- just a point of clarification: Bill Watterson did not go to Sundays only. New daily comics continued to appear in newspapers until Dec. 30, 1995, followed by the final Sunday strip on Dec 31, 1995. As for your accusations as to why he quit and the nature of his character- maybe you should meet the man before you judge him.
Are you sure you aren’t thinking of “Bloom County”? That’s the strip that became obnoxiously huge and took up the whole top of the comic section’s first page in our paper.
Bill, if you ever read these comments,I agree with your motives but…. it has been over 15 years and can I make a suggestion? Make some NEW, ORIGINAL strips that you could put into collections that you would NOT put into news papers. Just sell the books and that would give you the freedom you want and the art we crave. Please. :)
I would have ended the strip a bit more dramatically, with a tragedy that would have pitted Calvin against Moe – with the other kids hollering for someone to pull them apart – and when the dust settled, Calvin would have been victorious – and no longer the wimpy kid.
I hope this strip was intended for April 1. Reruns can’t be TOO taxing! And the daily strip brings my deceased brother back in my life for a few minutes each morning. He was so much a Calvin, complete with a Hobbes.
The Beatles comment is highly unusual. Must have been done just to cause a hub-bub. And it did.I still have about 300 movies on VHS and 3 players. Dang I’m richer that Jennifer on WKRP! Don’t watch them much anymore. Anyone wanna buy a boat load of tapes?Watterson is still one of the greats on toondom and stripes like Dude & Dude, while funny is completely computerized copies over and over of the same images. Watterson and Breathed were great artists as well as crazy genius and I miss the heck out of them. When are you guys gonna run The Fabulous Furry Freak Bros. or Fat Freddies Cat?? Right.
I remember thinking that the last strip should have been an older Calvin heading off to College and placing Hobs in the hands of another youngster before leaving because he needed someone.
These days Calvin would use his father’s computer to watch either soft or hardcore porno. His father’s reaction when he goes online the following day would be epic….
What’s missing from the opening letter to the editor (and it’s a good bet that the letter was addressed to Lee Salem at the time) was his response: "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh, all right. Just let us sell Hobbes stuffed plushies, pleeeeaassee????
This strip was drawn before the days of color, which wasn’t invented until the mid 20th century. Before that everything was in black and white. Priceless CH Sunday strip gag.
It’s the internet and DVDs now; not TV and VCRs! However, children of the 80s are the same with the children of this generation. This is also the reason why Calvin and Hobbes comic strips of the 80s are still read today. DON’T LET THE RERUNS END!
I was a Child Protection Worker around the time this was published and I know what would have happened. I did however, have one parent of a six year old who told me her daughter was “really quite grown up” and she felt it was perfectly acceptable to leave her alone.
Rent a VCR- yes, in early days of video rentals. The machines would play back only, no record feature. Why did the early VCRs cost $300 and up? Then when DVDs came out, they dropped to $40 and lower? Mass production or competition?

I don’t have the slightest idea why The Beatles posted that letter now, in what is right about the middle of this ten-year rerun of Calvin and Hobbes.
