Calvin and Hobbes Bridge Capacity - by Bill Watterson for November 26, 1986
Transcript:
Calvin: How do they know the load limit on bridges, Dad? Dad: Tehy drive bigger and bigger trucks over the bridge until it breaks. Then they weigh the last truck and rebuild the bridge. Calvin: Oh. I should've guessed. Mom: Dear, if you don't know the answer, just tell him.

My dad used to do this when I was little. When I was five my mom, dad, and I were at a buffet, and I looked up and asked why they had a light over each table. He simply replied that they made the food go bad more quickly, so people had to go and get more. I said ‘oh!’ and Mom just gave him an evil glance. Ironically my dad’s name was Calvin

They use physics. I was taking a physics class in High School when this was first published. I decided to figure the answer and guess what it was a question on the test.

My dad also does this. The only problem is that its hard to tell whether he is serious or not.

My second wife and I used to drive frequently with our daughters between Houston and Austin to see / pick up / drop off my older daughters. About halfway along the trip there’s a large electrical power generator station, with big towers that stick up into the air and pour out steam. I used to tell the daughters when they were little that that was where they made clouds. When they were really little they bought it, and were just fascinated. :-) :-)
We laugh about it now every time we drive by – it’s a fond memory for everyone.

I guess the more common question from a 6-year old would be, “what’s a load limit, dad?”.

Hey, that’s ingenious!! As long as you have the budget to do it, it should be fine!!
