Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for November 24, 1987
Transcript:
Calvin: Dad says the sun isn't going out. He says it's colder because the earth's orbit is taking us farther from the sun. He says winter will be here woon. Isn't it sad how some peoples grip on their lives is so precarious that they'll embrace any preposterous delusion rather than face an occasional bleak truth?

Interestingly, Calvin’s dad is wrong, or rather, right for the wrong reasons. Winter doesn’t occur because the Earth is further from the Sun. If it did, it’d happen at the same time in the northern and southern hemispheres. But actually, those are half a year apart. In fact, winter occurs in the Northern Hemisphere when the Earth is -closest- to the sun…

Yeah, I think it’s because Earth’s axis is tilted with respect to the sun, or something like that. I’m an astronomy student.

You’d think Calvin would know the truth, seeing as he’s 6 years old.

When I read it, it said “our hemisphere is tilted away from the sun”, which is more accurate…
