Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for January 13, 1988
Transcript:
Dad: It's great to see you, Max! It seems like ages since you've been here. Max: I'll say. I didn't think it had been so long, until I saw Calvin. This guy has really grown. So kid, what do you say? Calvin: I say you'd better watch your step, 'cause I've got a live man-eating tiger at home and if I so much as wink, he'll rip your legs right out. Max: Cute kid, bro.

Watterson has said it was awkward that Max couldn’t address Calvin’s parents by name. I don’t see how that’s any more awkward than Calvin’s parents not addressing each other by name.

Watterson may have missed a step here. I think there is a specific point at which it is impressed on a child that their parents have “real people” names and that there is more to them than just being parents. It was a little bit of a shock to me when it happened, though I was a bit younger than Calvin. Maybe he should have taken the opportunity to give them names and rocked Calvin’s self-centered world a little.
