Get Fuzzy by Darby Conley for June 19, 2011
Transcript:
Satchel: New stuff? Bucky: This, my ten-watt friend, is a genuine C.I.A.-issue feline disguise kit. Once this disguise is implemented, you will no longer see Bucky Katt. I will be capable of infiltrating even even the filthiest ferret lair. I will now... What is this? It's just a cheap mask... Satchel: Ooo, and a costume tail! Bucky: I charged Rob's card $85 to ship this plastic junk from California?! Satchel: Woops, the tail's broken. Bucky: It's already broke?! Stupid cali-plastic... Ex-spy tail... Atrocious! Satchel: Ha ha! If you say it loud enough, you'll always sound precocious! Bucky: Hold on-C.I.A.? Coon imagery of America?! Put 'em back in the box, Satchel. Satchel: Satcha? Who da Satcha? Give me trash!

Heh. Love Frame six.
Reminds me of a scottish football headline when Inverness Caledonian Thistle hit Celtic three nil. The Sun headline? Super-Caley-go-ballistic,-Celtic-are-atrocious.

The coon “joke” here is racist: I have really enjoyed this cartoon for years, but urge the author to think seriously about how incredibly offensive the two final frames are.

My newspaper “The Tennessean” in Nashville wouldn’t run this comic they said they “considered the content inappropriate for publication”

Weird. What has Darby been up to?
Uh, Actually Daddy over 13 years ago
@Sara: this can only be racist to someone looking to draw attention to themselves. It’s obvious from the props that he’s talking about a raccoon; by your argument, the terms “coon hunting” and “coon dog” are also racist, despite both being regularly accepted terms in the hunting community. Stop being so ridiculously sensitive and go find a real issue to focus on.
thespaceghost over 13 years ago
@Sara Thompson I think you’re exactly whats wrong with race relations. Since you are too busy looking for a reason to cry racism, let us explain the joke. Bucky was too busy seeing what he wanted to see (a ferret disguise) and ended up ordering something completely different. Seems like someone else did the same thing to the interpretation of the joke; seeing something they only wanted to see that was completely different than the original intent. To Buckys credit, at least he’s a fictional character.

The word coon itself is not racist. It is only racist or offensive when it is used to describe a person of a certain race. I have a dog that is a Redtick (or English) Coonhound. We do not call him a raccoon hound. (;^)

haha, deja vu! I remember this one! But the ‘precocious’ panel is still hilarious!
lkinsley over 13 years ago
I LUV the ‘precocious’ panel!! That Bucky. Even if it is a rerun, my day isn’t complete without my morning Bucky-ism. (Even if there are some odd people that think ’coon is racist. I guess we will have to all contact our congressmen and change the name of the animal like we do for school mascots. Then we should please everbody…)

Sarah is what’s known as an “offense thief”. She takes offense, when it’s not offered.Dear sweet jeebus, I hope Bucky never joins the K.K.K.! (Krazy Kat Klub for fans of the late George Herriman)

I agree with Sara T. Look at the last panel, the way Satch is talking, its a caricature of the way southern blacks use to talk (kind of like Jar Jar Binks) So I think there is a bit of racist undertone here.

Note to GoComics – please don’t omit the larger zoom version of the comics!

hahahah, this one is a repeat. the mary poppins similarity is pure clever genius. hehehe look at bucky’s nose when he says its already broke, hes pist! HAHA that’s classiC!!!!

I agree with Sara. I normally like this strip, but the language at the end is appallingly racist. And the defenses of the racism are really weak.Either you attack Sara, or you pretend that coon is alluding to raccoon. But Satchel isn’t speaking like a raccoon, but instead as a caricature of an African American,, so you can throw that weak defense out the window. And no, I don’t go around looking to be offended: it’s just I find racist caricatures masquerading as jokes offensive.

Wow. What’s up with Derrick and Sara? Seriously!

Cant anybody in today’s whimpy sensitive pc society just look at a cartoon and enjoy it without being offended? Such weak people!

I assumed coon = raccoon but could not and cannot figure out what Satchel is doing in the last panel unless I buy Derrick’s interpretation. Can anyone explain, please?
TXSUGARKAT over 13 years ago
my daily strip changes everyday which is great and that is what i want, but the one at the bottom stays the same week after week, after week after week, after, week, after week, after week…….see what I mean. Just plain boring!!!!!!!
connie over 13 years ago
This is racist. I can’t imagine how anyone could be naive enough to think it isn’t.
judithacrow over 13 years ago
Darb, is someone else writing your strip today? with your wit, you don’t have to resort to this.
kbyerman over 13 years ago
Sadly, it is the Mary Poppins fans who refuse to see racism anywhere that allow such blatantly offensive material to turn up again and again. I would like to believe that Conley is smart enough to be making that point, but I’m afraid that he is just seeing what he can get away with . Sad.

Hmm… So, following this racism “logic” to its conclusion, I should be persuaded that Bucky’s perennial sworn enemies in this comic strip are not racoons (aka coons), but Black people? Preposterous!
mustangmike53 over 13 years ago
Lessee, Satchel’s wearing a raccoon mask and a raccoon tail, so he must be imitating a… black person.
Uh, no.

I have to agree the racial thing hit me at once, after reading the final panel. The dialogue and reference to “coon” was not a good mix. One or the other okay, but both were too much.
Stacia over 13 years ago
This is pretty shocking. “Coon Imagery” plus Satchel’s stereotypical black/jive accent in the final panel makes this unmistakably racist. Yet even though newspapers refused to run the strip both now and in 2009 when it first ran, and plenty of people have seen the overt racism, the best anyone can do to defend Darb is say “you just want to be offended.” That’s pretty weak. If that’s the best you can do to “prove” this isn’t racism, well, you don’t have much of a case.I can’t figure out why the syndicate re-ran this one. Guess they like controversy.
theinsanity over 13 years ago
The insanity! People, watch Swamp People on the History Channel and figure out who Darby is truly being “racist” against; but then again, you can’t be racists against “pinky”. Get off your pins and needles and just enjoy the humor that Darby presents.

Honestly I didn`t even think about the “Coon” think being racist. Of course maybe that’s just me being “Simple-Minded”.
