Actually, I was going to leave a comment that I found this strip just a bit over the top today, since that word still has some bad effects on people. It’s just sad that we find we have to make “jokes” at the expense of others, even if the “others” are people we may disagree with.
One is only hypocritical if one objects when one is made fun of (by, for example, being called a bad name – whatever the word), but then makes fun of others. The fact that perfectly acceptable words are turned into curses has nothing to do with it.
I think it’s a funny comic – ‘pansies’ is so 1950s I don’t consider it offensive. Makes me wonder how old the cartoonist is. Offense is in the mind of the listener/reader. A word or phrase may actually be meant as an insult – but if I don’t value your opinion of me more than my own opinion of me then it has no power.
