Been there! Mom, in her early 80’s, would take the car out to the store, etc. Once my husband called me outside and showed me the side of her car. She obviously had hit something, her excuse was, “Oh someone must have run into me in the parking lot.” Well, that wasn’t the only time. Finally, she took ill, and her doctor said to her, “I don’t want you driving anymore”. She said, “you mean until I get better”, and he said “No, I mean no more driving, period.” Well she was not a happy camper!

Lucky me – both my grandma and Mom stopped driving voluntarily in mid-70s – Sensible women. My dad fought till his driver’s license was taken away by the state at 78.

First off, age should never come into discussions about driving. The ability to continue driving is based on physical/mental conditions which can occur at any age. 80% is based on vision, vision loss can occur at any age. Sustaining driving depends on physical health, flexibility, mental accuity and vision. Check out AAA program “DriveWell” and “Car Fit” for assistance in aging and driving.

It’s tough to give up driving at the same time it’s become difficult to walk anywhere. Roll on self-drive cars!
