Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for May 25, 1990
Transcript:
Mom: Calvin! What are you doing home?! It's not even noon! Calvin: Uh, they let us out early today. There was, um, a gas leak. Mom: What?! Does anyone know you left?! I'm calling the school. Calvin: Don't waste your time! Everyone was evacuated! There's nobody there! Mom: Hello? Elementary school office, please. Calvin: Our hero hadn't counted on running into a Zark enforcer ship! Spiff's evasive maneuvers come to naught! This could be the end!

If Calvin had planned his response in advance without the “Uh” and “um”, maybe Mom would’ve bought it?And Calvin’s school is just called “Elementary School?” How unimaginative…

“Uh, they let us out early today. There was, um, a virus outbreak. … Don’t waste your time! They sent everyone home and shut down the school! There’s nobody there!”
