Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for June 23, 1990
Transcript:
Dad: It's getting dark, Calvin. Time to come in and go to bed! Calvin: But Hobbes and I were catching fireflies. Can't we stay out a little longer? Dad: Ha! First you didn't want to go out, and now you don't want to come in! See, by not watching TV, you had more fun, and now you'll have memories of something real you did, instead of something fake you just watched. Calvin: Nothing spoils fun like finding out it builds character.

I wish I had more moments like that
But only a few more. I preferred staying inside and playing games most of the time :P

You’re still alive, right? You can have those moments now, if you make the time…

He built character and didn’t even know it. Painless.

“Character Building”, like a Double-Edged Sword. Careful you don’t accidentally create a Villain (or worse, a Monster…) while trying to build a Hero, or at the very least a Normal Person…

When Calvin grows up, he’ll thank his dad for the fact that he didn’t grow up to become as boring a person as Jon Arbuckle.

If having fun builds character, Calvin’s just loaded with it. Unfortunately, Calvin’s definition of fun usually coincides with others’ misery.

Calvin’s Dad should’ve said, “…‘rather than’ of something fake you just watched”. It sounds clearer this way.
