Rat says, "What are you reading, Goat?" Goat says, "'Fahrenheit 451.' It's this science fiction novel about a hedonistic anti-intellectual society where nobody can own any books, so nobody reads. Instead, everyone just sits around watching interactive wall-size TV's." Rat says, "You just described my living room." Goat says, "Well, it used to be science fiction." Rat says, "Hey, their TV's aren't bigger than mine, are they?"

I love Fahrenheit 451. That and the Illustrated Man, another Ray Bradbury book. Definitely order them or pick them up on the library if you want a good read.

According to Faber, TV has the potential to have depth of its own. In F451 it never does. IRL there is a ton of brainless programming, but there are shows with real depth, commentary on the world, etc. People can bond over shows, too. And people make their livelihood off it. News and weather is also important, but no one relies on TV for that anymore anyway. However if you watch nonstop compulsively and don’t think about what you watch, like Rat, that is a problem. There are still many ways real life is similar to the world of F451, though.
