“Wherefore” means “why”. When Juliet asks “Wherefore art thou Romeo?” she’s not wondering where he is but why he has to be a scion of a family that is at odds with hers; if he was anything but a Montague, they could court openly. This is one of the most annoying misrepresentations of the play – that, and the fact that, unlike in comics and cartoons, Romeo does not announce himself to Juliet, but eavesdrops throughout the entire balcony scene. “That chick’s got a balcony you could do Shakespeare from!” — Mudhead (from High School Madness)

Juliette:“Romeo, Romeo wherefore art thou Romeo?”

Romeo: “I’m here in the garden with you, the darn balcony broke”
