Safflower seeds. The capsaicin in them will keep the squirrels from attacking the feeder—they may nibble occasionally at what the birds drop but they won’t make any effort to get at the feeder.

Squirrels are just as fun to watch…plus, they’re good eatin’.

I solved the squirrel problem by taking a plastic gallon jug, cutting out the bottom, and placing it at the top of the pole, under the feeder. It has worked for many years. A squirrel occasionally climbs up the pole, ends up with his head inside the jug, and climbs back down. The jug is too slippery to grab onto. The birds are slobs and toss enough seeds onto the ground for the squirrels anyway.

My bird feeder has a spring mechanism that, if a relatively heavy animal like a squirrel sits at it, the animal’s weight closes the feeder door. Birds, being lightweight, don’t trigger the mechanism. Look up “brome squirrel buster”

Mark Rober worked on the Mars Rovers. Check out his “Backyard Squirrel Maze” on YouTube, it’s hilarious. Also his war against Porch Pirates.
