And people, do remember to show some respect here. :-) It’s bushy-tailed wood rat. They are actually rather pretty animals, even if their urine stinks to high heaven.
I stand corrected. Joe’s comment from yesterday caused me to seek out my Peterson “Field Guide to the Mammals”. The correct name is bushytail woodrat.
The book also references said critters’ squirrel-like tail, which I agree isn’t particularly bushy. But I’ve got a theory. Things in the arid west aren’t always quite so big, so the pioneers thought these guys’ tails were as close as they’d come to really squirrel-like tails.
