deck the halls is a happy song to hear during the holidays but it just doesn’t seem right when you are in the big box stores and they start playing Christmas music in the middle of October

And I thought the apparel was ending up on the deck.

Now I know why I never found that party.

The Pogo revival in the late 80’s was written by Larry Doyle (who has since gone on to write for The Simpsons, The New Yorker, and the good book (which was turned into a bad movie) I Love You, Beth Cooper), and the art was by Neal Sternecky, who I believe is now drawing Donald Duck comic books.

The revived strip fizzled not so much because it was bad (it wasn’t), but because audience reaction was hostile to the very idea. People said things like “Kelly wouldn’t be doing it this way, he’d be…” and so on. Some thought it was too political (those whose best memories of Pogo were from the earlier years) and some thought it wasn’t political enough (those who preferred later Pogo). I admit that their portrayal of G. Bush as a lightweight jackalope, blown away by a strong wind, wasn’t particularly compelling, but I think they tried too hard with that bit.

I was particularly interested in this because Doyle and Sternecky had previously done a wonderful strip for the Daily Illini (University of Illinois student-run paper) called Escaped From the Zoo (about an Animal House-type fraternity, with real animals), and as I have always been a Pogophile I thought that, if there was going to be a new Pogo, they were the right guys for the job.

As far as I know, there’s no collection of the Doyle/Sternecky strips available, but if they’re out there somewhere and somebody knows how to get at them, I’d appreciate the info.
