Just remember … free stuff (to you) is worth what you pay for it. It’s also worth remembering that nothing is ever free. Ultimately, somebody will have to pay for it.
I hate to suggest doing anything with my in-laws, because they insist on paying for everything. I don’t want to be greedy.
Especially when I watched my brothers only spend time with my (now deceased) parents when they got something out of the visit. (Usually just free food, but it was rare that they’d do something FOR my parents in return.)
I think it’s reasonable that people should be careful with credit cards, “especially when they are on fixed income”, as Joe Allen says. I also think it’s useful for people to give advice to their own age group - it’s not always so readily accepted across a “generation gap”!
Possibly Evelyn’s daughter is a skinflint, though I prefer to assume she can’t afford the usual etiquette of suggesting an occasion that costs money. But even if she’s chintzy, it’s probably too late now to raise her right. Evelyn will get nowhere by poisoning the occasion with sarcasm. If she’s going to accept, and if she’s going to enjoy the trip at all, I think it’s pointless to make her daughter pay a penalty by demeaning her.
This is a real issue for millions of people nowadays. A good choice as fodder for a comic strip. But not everyone’s laughing.

Evelyn got her son to pay for the swimming pool for the Elderpark. So she has some backing from that side. The daughter just wants her share!
