Big Nate by Lincoln Peirce for August 19, 2011
Transcript:
Francis, give me ten dollars! What? Why drag me into this? Because this is a sure thing! We buy this figurine for ten bucks, and sell it for a hundred! We'll make a huge profit! We'll be rich! Are you sure that thing is worth a hundred bucks? Positive! Trust me! That's what you said when you convinced me to invest in your "Fudge-on-a-stick" business. ...Which would have worked if not for that heat wave.

I’m guessing Nate read it wrong and it was priced at a dollar.

Fudge on a stick, covered in hardshell chocolate and kept frozen would be a good idea. Look at cheesecake on a stick.

HATED that heat wave.

mac47: Hated? Past tense? It is still going on here. One 98 high kept from breaking 1980’s consecutive >100 record (but made second place) and there is still a remote chance of breaking that year’s total >100 record (currently in fourth but third is certain and second is likely). As the old Brooklyn Dodgers would say, “Wait ’til next year” – and one next year, they were in California.

Fudge-on-a-Stick would probably be eminently workable, if you got the viscosity just right. Softer than a chocolate bar at room temperature, but firmer at over 100 degrees (approximately the melting point of cocoa butter). Maybe Nate doesn’t have the Kitchen Chemistry acumen do figure it out, but I doubt you’d need a laboratory…

No matter how hard he tries…something embarrassing is going to happen to Nate and Francis.

Nice to hear from folks from the Pacific Northwest. When I was on a book tour last fall, I visited both Portland OR and Seattle, neither of which I’d seen before. Wish I’d been able to do a little more sight-seeing, but they both seemed like great cities!

I can’t buy stuff online. I wish I could. And I’m going to check the Seattle Times newspaper website soon.
