I don’t know what’s going on with this site. This is the B&W version prepared specifically for newspapers. Where’s the color version, I wonder???

Okay, I had to look up “FILK” to get the joke. What the LARP is going on these days when you have to research comics?

I was introduced to filk singing when my Mom and I went to my aunt and uncle’s 50th wedding celebration. It was at a hotel in Cherry Hill NJ, which had also booked a Star Trek convention for the same weekend. Filk singing was listed on the same schedule of events as anniversary dinner, but clearly not attended by the same crowd. We had my cousin Guy Van Duser entertaining us on guitar. Anyone who’s bought Guy’s albums knows he leans more toward jazz.

Sometimes we go by the SCTV rule- also applicable to MST3K: We know everyone won’t get every joke (thought we’d like them to) but as long as some readers get it it’s not wasted. Sometimes John sends ones that I don’t get, and I have to ask him to explain. He has far more geek knowledge than I have.

Looked up ‘FILK’ – STILL don’t get it. Guess I’m not as geeky as I thought.

My understanding is that fans get together and extemporize songs. The subject matter tends to be SF/fantasy related.

Perhaps if JJ had referenced a particular singer/song combination and said, “So you’re bummed not to hear Heather Alexander sing ‘March of Cambreath’?” it would be funnier to the fen.

So, basically Roy misread the ad that said “folk singers” as “filk singers” and get disappointed because there is no SF/fantasy stuff, am I right?

I learned about Filk songs at OryCon, the Oregon Science Fiction Convention held in Portland, Oregon over Veterans Day weekend. Tom Smith, Michael Longcor, and Leslie Fish are some of my favorites. http://www.prometheus-music.com/
