No what American’s call football is really football. What the rest of the world calls futbol is really called BORING by the rightheaded thinking Americans. Sorry you got this one SERIOUSLY wrong.
I am not a huge fan of any sport but I can still appreciate both American football and world futbol. American football seems to be more of a “macho” game of strength and force with the occasional flash of finesse. Futbol (or soccer) is almost all about finesse. I see guys pass the ball to teammates I did not even notice and I have the benefit of a camera looking at a sizeable chunk of the playing field. Each sport has its fans and that is good. And American football even seems to be working its way into other parts of the world.
Athletes play futbol. American football players run for 5-10 seconds, tops, and then hold hands and slap each other on the butt. Explains the whole gay marriage issue.
I am puzzled about what Millar & Hinds meant by the comment. I think they screwed up the grammar/logic of it. It seems to be saying that everyone in the world calls this game soccer and they are wrongheaded. But they do not call it soccer. WE US-uns call it soccer. So it is puzzling. I do not find soccer/futbol boring — I find it tiring. It just makes me get out of breath watching them constantly run back & forth& back & forth. Man! [Pant, Pant!}
Soccer is from aSOCiation football, to distinguish it from rugby, US football, Canadian football, Australian Rules, and kick the can. Soccer and kick the can are the only ones played primarily with the feet and the ball in contact together, which makes kick the can questionable as well, depending on how strictly one defines ball.
Americans, plus Canucks, Aussies, and really every country in the world where the words “foot” and “ball” mean those things except England (who, by the way, invented the word “soccer” — it’s an Oxfordism). If anything, the pommies are the ones doing it wrong out of contrarianism.
The blokes at Oxford University must have named it soccer because they were American? soc is short for association, er just capped it off, 2 syllables not 7.

how can you call American football “football” when the only time it touches a players foot is on kickoffs, PAT, field goals and punts?
isn’t it being a little egotistical saying that every other country in the world is wrong and we are correct?
i can understand that not everyone thinks football is “the beautiful game” but the same can be said for baseball or American football.

Yep. Boring. Except the Mexican guy who shouts “goal” for 3 minutes without a breath. Now THAT’s sport!
