The summer my mother signed me up for swimming lessons at a public pool (after I had nearly drowned in a river), that summer it was raining nearly every day. Pray to the weather gods, Calvin!
Jaguars also like to swim, but even tigers and jaguars don’t naturally enjoy water. The cubs hate it, the mothers have to throw them into the water to get them used to the idea (unfortunately sometimes she throws them into water that’s too deep). It’s kinda weird, it’s not instinctive for them to love water like, say, retriever dogs, but it is instinctive for them to teach the cubs to swim.
There are some breeds of domestic cat – the Turkish Van, Abyssinian and Somali, for instance, who love water. In fact, the Van is also called “the Turkish Swimming Cat”. I have a cat who likes to sit in the back of the tub when I shower.
The Asian Fishing Cat loves to swim. The Columbus Zoo (Ohio) saw the arrival of three baby Asian Fishing Cats this summer. I don’t think the babies are on public view yet, but I can’t wait to see them.
When someone smells “funny” — even if they’re your best buddy in the entire world — that’s just not funny at all!!!!!
Meanwhile, I would have thought Hobbes would have jumped at the chance to take “swim lessons” with Calvin if for no other reason than there might be some cute girls there for him to “smooch” with!!!!!
Hobbes, as usual, has it right on the money…never tell a tiger to “go soak your head”….although I have to admit that the ones in real life don’t mind the water at all, and if it’s really hot they will get into shallow water and lie in it for extended periods….
When i was 6 my mom signed me up for swimming lessons…figures the average temperature that summer was 18 degrees C! Hated it!However, I did end up on the swim team in high school!
Rayannina: Actually, the housecat is one of the few that doesn’t like swimming. Most don’t let getting wet stop them mid chase. Tigers, jaguars, ocelots, margay, fishing cats, and several others actually use swimming recreationally. You will even find the occasional housecat that likes swimming.
I read them, but don’t often acknowledge that I’ve read or liked them. The Peanuts posts always seem to relate to the current strip. Loved todays post as well.
@Dogsniff: For many years, I’ve been keeping track of dates and key words whenever I read a strip that I like. Now, when I read a strip that reminds me of one of my favorites from the past, I can usually locate the old one by running a computer search for the key words in my database. Then I locate the strip in GoComics by using the date, and I post a link to it. Why? So that I can bring pleasure to other people, sharing something with them that I have already enjoyed in the past. It’s also a pleasure for me to read the old strips again when I share them.A few months ago, I went through quite a few weeks of Teresa’s Frog Blog, looking at what she had posted, but skipping the comments. I found a few things that I really liked, but much of what she posts is not to my taste. I appreciate your recommendation regarding the comments, but I don’t have time for following the comments on more than one strip on an ongoing basis. One can never take on a new pursuit without giving up some time that could have been used for something else.

Actually, tigers are the only cats that DO like swimming. Hobbes probably just hates the chlorine.

Hobbes ’s can swimming….be smart Tiger
GrimmaTheNome about 13 years ago
If Hobbes smells funny when he’s drying, he needs a good ‘swim’ in the washing machine.
jai-jai about 13 years ago
Cos, Hobbes is a good swimmer.

I think mum doesn’t want Calvin to see Hobbes licking himself after swimming.
shewith5 about 13 years ago
Why didn’t she sign up Hobbes for swimming lessons? 1 word-soup!
crobinson019 about 13 years ago
Oh No!!! Roslyn is ALSO Calvin’s Swimming Coach!! (OK Spoiler Alert)
And thanks Hobbes—that was a great flashback!

Hobbes – that’s a bit of a rip-off from Winnie the Pooh and Chrisopher Robin, isn’t it? (but none the worse for that)
MysteryCat about 13 years ago
Hobbes, thanks for that. The setting is reminiscent of Pogo, too.

The reruns have just skipped 3 weeks. Here is a good one that we missed:
Calvin and Hobbes=======-That is a good one! Makes me miss summer all the more. :-)
Calvin, swimming lessons now will come in handy in the future.
bmonk about 13 years ago
And, besides, Hobbes is stuffed—and you’re not supposed to go swimming right after you’ve eaten.

You’re just like me Calvin.. I hated swimming lessons too.
So glad I don’t have them anymore.

Tigers swim quite well. A wet tiger smells better than a wet dog. Getting my pet cat into water is a LOT more dangerous than coaxing a tiger.
ratlum about 13 years ago
Calvin wont give xxx how long it takes to dry his one and only buddy off.

Too bad Calvin is so intransigent. I loved swimming lessons when I was little!
adubman about 13 years ago
If you want to grow up strong, Calvin, put a tiger in your tank.
