Reminds me of the old feller on his porch who was questioned about the name of a small stream just down the road from his place. “That’s the crick,” he replied.A few months later, when the crew put up the new sign announcing that this was “Crick Creek”, a member of the crew wandered over and asked the feller, still in his rocking chair on the porch, what he thought of it.“Should have been t’other way around,” he drawled.

“Calvin’s Creek” has an alliterative quality to it that “Hob Crk” lacks, although Hobbes would have priority. Then again, why aren’t all our mountains, lakes, cricks, etc. named after Native Americans?

How do streams get named? In western Illinois we have a Bear Creek – handles 10X as much drainage as some streams named as a River. (Never been known to have any bears in this area – but overrun with deer and geese) Also, why is the Missouri River considered a tributary of the Mississippi? Why didn’t the Mississippi name go to the Mo. as it is longer than the Miss. north of St. Louis? The Illinois River is logical as it goes through Illinois. But the Mississippi River only touches Mississippi – and flows through Louisiana.

For a figment of his imagination, Hobbes is pretty tangible when it comes to burning Calvin.

No problem… Just fix the sign to say “Calvin’s Tree” and put it up in front of tree next to “Hobs Crk”. That way, Calvin and Hobbes will always be together! :-)
