Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for July 11, 2004
Transcript:
"The sad, lonely journey of a 'Pearls' comic strip" "That's me." "Hahaha... This one is really edgy and funny... People will love it... Hahaha..." "...It's funny, babe. But you've got to change that one word... You know United's not gonna allow it." "The wife" "Yeah... You're probably right. Okay, I'll change it." "It's nice, Stephan, but we just can't show that one image in the third panel." "Fine, Jake... I'll delete it." "The editors at United Features Syndicate" "And tell him to watch his grammar." "...And his punctuation." "...Listen, we simply cannot allow you to make a reference to that topic, because if we do, four grandmothers in Provo will complain and we'll have no choice but to drop your strip and replace it with 'Maryworth.'" "The newspaper editor" "Okay. Okay." "Sigh." "Draw draw draw" "What a pretty day, Pig." "It sure is, Rat." "Yay!" "Man, are the comics today lame..." "It's these cartoonists. They've got nooooooo creativity."

Actually, I think Pearls replaced Mary Worth in my newspaper.

If you don’t have an open mind and a broad sense of humor, just stick with Dennis the Menace, Peanuts, Garfield, and Family Circle.

Sad but true. A big part of is, in spite of the opinions expressed by the couple in the last panel, the fact that newspaper readers were by 2004 skewing older and so were less apt to find edgier humor appealing. When “The Boondocks” began, our local paper took the bold step of running it from the very beginning. Unsurprisingly, it didn’t sit too well with a reading public that wanted more easily digestible and non-challenging humor, and it was dropped after a year or so. The same paper, BTW, started running “Pearls” in 2012 and still carries it.
