Frazz by Jef Mallett for August 22, 2011
Transcript:
Girl: I looked up that piano player you like. Boy, is he homely. Frazz: Randy Newman? He's not homely! Girl: Dopey smile, gap tooth, what-me-worry... Frazz: That's Alfred E. Neuman! Girl: Oh. Search engines that finish your keywords for you are not your friend. Frazz: You've got a point.

As of yet, I have not seen any campaign literature of my boyhood role model. Alfred E. Newman for President!

With Harry Nilsson reference? I often think of Harry when someone says something about having a point. Add in Randy and it’s almost guaranteed.

She’s right about the search engines. I can’t find half of what I used to, now they try to second guess what you’re looking for!

Back in 1964 when postage for a postcard was 4 cents, MAD ran one of their 50 cent specials that included an entire sheet of color stamps with a picture of our boy, and it literally said “Alfred E Neuman 4 President.” I put one on a postcard, mailed it to a friend, and it got there.

I used to know the man who drew Alfie: the late Frank Kelly Freas. Among other things, he had more Hugo awards for SF/Fantasy illustrations and covers than anybody else. Neat guy! His widow, Laura Freas, is also a great artist, btw.

Richard Roush: You got there first! He got orthodontics and a better toupé and changed his name to Rick Perry? The goofy grin and lack of worry unites all three.

LaflnLarry, your “Harry Nilsson” reference was oblique (but not “obliotic”) enough to be one of Frazz’s own. Well done!

I renewed my subscription to Mad after 30 years. Unfortunately I had a PO box in the same PO I worked in. It came days late and dog-eared.
