Saw a Russian movie recently where a priest’s advice for combatting one’s inner demons was this:
Priest: “Douse yourself with cold water three times daily.”Parishoner: “Is that all? Should I say a prayer or maybe…”Priest: “Three times daily, with the coldest water you can find.”
Like the priest above, this priest held that sometimes some very basic measures can work wonders, and while we can do nothing without God’s help, we also make an effort ourselves. The Russians say: “Trust in God, but don’t slack off” (На Бога надейся, а сам не плошай).
I worked my junior year service project at a geriatric unit at the hospital that dealt with dementia patients and it was difficult and sad to see these people constantly confused and upset. Sometimes they’d lash out at the nurses or even a volunteer like me. It was a really heartbreaking (though some of it was rewarding) for me and I wasn’t even related to those people, I can only imagine how hard it would be for Lila to go through.
