Sad, isn’t it? By the time the real holidays come around, we’re all so sick of them that they aren’t nearly as much fun any more. Let’s face it, Retail and Corporate Greed have ruined life as we used to know it.
Here in the UK, some shops have been displaying their Christmas stock since July. It’s summer for goodness sake, can’t we have our meagre bit of summer without ramming Christmas down our throats?
Not much exaggeration. Retailers cheapen every holiday by promoting them months in advance. And I blame retailers because they artificially create that demand by preemptively propagandizing holiday products before their due time. (Remember the “Tickle Me Elmo” craze? Wii?)
I am totally tired of the advanced advertising of upcoming holidays. it was really ridiculous one year when we needed to get one of my kids a new bathing suit near the end of July. The darn store already had them off the floor to make room for school clothes and Halloween stuff. I had to hunt around in other stores before finding one that still had them to sell.
As a kid, I can remember not seeing Christmas decorations in the stores until the day after Thanksgiving. We watched the Macy’s parade on TV and the next day things magically had appeared in the stores. And, the stores opened at a reasonable hour instead of at midnight.
There are folks out here who keep their Christmas lights lit all year! Kinda spoils the joy of lights that people put up just for Christmas, but not entirely. :D
